Founded in 1933, Oriental Brewery is South Korea’s second largest beer producer. With a market share greater than 40%, Oriental Brewery sells more than 800 million cases of beer annually in South Korea. In 2009, KKR and Affinity Equity Partners purchased Oriental Brewery for $1.8 billion from Anheuser Busch-InBev. Since the acquisition, we have worked side-by-side with Oriental Brewery management to strengthen brand marketing, expand production capacity, upgrade IT infrastructure, reduce energy use and improve procurement processes.
During 2010, the company’s first full year under new ownership, Oriental Brewery grew volume by 4.4% and gained 1.8% of market share in South Korea. Oriental Brewery also became the first company in Asia to participate in KKR’s Green Portfolio Program, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its production facilities.
